As the van pulled into the little driveway behind last night’s venue here in Richmond, Virginia, my eyes caught sight of one of my favorite back alley phenomenons – a street art gallery. I spoke briefly with the man who owned the restaurant next door after he’d joined us in the alley to work on one of his own pieces. I asked a bit about the artwork and learned that in addition to his rad pink bird-creature creation, the alley also was rocking a killer fish painting done by his two sons, ages 4 and 2, respectively. I was very impressed by all of their work, as well as the other anonymous creations dotting the corridor. If you were to walk down that alley today, you might see something sorta like this:

Tonight, then. We’re returning to Winchester, VA for an ‘evening with’-type shindig, flyin’ solo over at the Bright Box Theater. We hit the stage at 7:30pm, but doors open at 6:30pm so come out, have a beer, and say hi! Tickets will be $17 at the door; advance tickets go for $12. Hopin’ to see some old and new faces tonight!

Best,
Adam

0 Music of the Femme #3 D’Angelo – Brown Sugar

  • · music of the femme

The artists featured on prior posts were female, but I decided for this episode to provide music FOR the femme. Still keeping to the same format, D’Angelo hails from Richmond, Va. Richmond is also my birthplace, so tonights’s show is a homecoming. His sweet crooning inspired, and continues to inspire me and other members of the Dirty Bourbon. Enjoy the video of Brown Sugar below. May your day be a little sweeter because of it. We play the The Broadberry tonight in Richmond, Va. We open for The Trongone Band and Major and the Monbacks. Doors at 8pm, we take stage at 9pm. Hope to see you there!

Ladies and gentlemen,

We’ve spent the past 4 months winding and wheeling all over the country, making new friends and rattling new walls with the sonic goodness, but now we’re back to one of our oldest and favorite stomping grounds.  That’s right!  We’re back at Greensboro, NC’s own Blind Tiger for a solid evening of raucous music making, whiskey sipping, and foot stomping!  After all of the amazing places we’ve been out west, it’s still a great feeling to be back on the balmy east coast on familiar roads.

Doors open at 7 and things will get rolling a little after 9.  Come make the hang!  We want to see lots of familiar faces tonight.

Joe Tarto: bassist, tuba king, composer and arranger whose career spanned over six decades

After his stint in the Army band during World War I, Tarto broke into the New York music scene and quickly became the go to man for the low end. He recorded, composed and arranged for jazz greats like Bix Beiderbecke and Fletcher Henderson and he was a member of the CBS and NBC studio orchestras. On top of all of that, he recorded the background music for Betty Boop and Popeye cartoons. A true badass.

P.S. Gig tonight at Scruffy City Hall in Knoxville, Tennessee. Show starts at 10.

Holy cow it’s been a while since our last BBR post! So for today, I’m going to put up a recent treasure I found while we were in Eugene, OR…

Yes folks, this is drummer porn at it’s finest featuring the swinging drum legends, Buddy Rich and Gene Krupa! I found this at a Salvation Army within 10 sec. of digging and couldn’t believe it! Just like that! Wow. Burnin’ Beat is a 1962 sequel to their 1955 album Krupa and Rich (which I now HAVE to find).

Now I could go on and on and on and on about the impact these two men had on jazz music, drumming, and showmanship, but that would take me all day and night. So instead I’m going to talk about one of the cooler features on this album, and that is on the backside of the sleeve..20150717_130700

That’s right, an entire breakdown of each song’s arrangements, y’all! I’ve never seen it before on any other record I own, and thank god too cause I’ve got a lot to study and this will make it much easier!

Tonight we’re in Newport, KY at The Southgate House Revival! Showtime is 9pm!

See y’all there ~ Boots
