0 Crested Butte, CO: Jeeping up the Continental Divide

We had an awesome time in Crested Butte the past day and a half! Played our gig with dogs running in between us on stage, taken care of by Tully’s bar and grill where we jammed late night brass band style, then climbed to the top of the Continental Divide in a Jeep driven by our baddass new friend, Vanessa. 0 Standards in Stange Places pt.2: Denver, Colorado

On our way from Denver to Grand Junction the band decided to stop at an ARC Thrift Store for saucy deals on some used clothes. Outside the store, we made friends with Rico Suave and his friend Frank, two musicians who were practicing for thier upcoming Fourth of July gig. Cool ass dudes. Frank frank played the maracas as well as a wooden castanet clapper on his belly, and Rico held down the guitar (he was actually stationed in Fort Polk years ago). We decided to play Struttin with Some BBQ, one of our favorite Louis Armstrong originals! Enjoy

0 Hanging at Second Story Garage!!

A few months back we stopped off at a small, makeshift recording studio in the newsroom of the Daily Camera, a news outfit in Boulder. Second Story Garage brings in local and national acts to come in to hang and play a few tunes, which they record and share with loads and loads of people online. It was a good time, and we’re happy to finally share with everyone what we laid down there.

1 Bootsy’s Box of Records pt 15

Salutations, friends! For this edition of BBR I’ve chosen a record I recently picked up by a native of Colorado!

Mr Paul Whiteman, “The King of Jazz,” folks

I’ll admit, when I first bought this album, I was was really just interested in hearing the arrangement of George Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue (the first recording of this song ever by the way), but after reading more about Mr, Whiteman on the back side of the album, I had found something much more special! Paul Whiteman was a prolific big band and Jazz composer, having written over 3000 arrangements for his band and others. During the 20s, he became the most popular band leader with an imposing group of up to 35 musicians. By 1922, he was in charge of over 28 ensembles on the east coast and was earning over a $1,000,000 a year. Damn!

Have you ever heard of Ms. Édith Piaf?

Édith Piaf, also known as “The Little Sparrow,” was a French singer who became an icon of France during World War II. Born in 1915 on the streets near Belleville, she grew up in a bordello, eventually becoming a vaudevillian street performer in her teens with her acrobat father. It wasn’t until 1935, when she was finally discovered by a nightclub owner in Paris, that she began singing professionally and would shake up the world in the 40s with her voice. Her career, which lasted until her death in 63′, produced many hits, including her most well known “La Vie en Rose.”
