As we continue our two-week pause for a worthy cause in Colorado, I could only wonder what artists might be from these parts. I was pleasantly surprised to see one of my favorite singers, India Arie was born in Denver. One of my favorite songs by her is below.

We make our way to Crestone, Colorado today to play at The Cloud Station. Doors at 7, show at 8pm.

Have you ever heard of Ms. Édith Piaf? Screen shot 2015-06-05 at 10.20.19 AM

Édith Piaf, also known as “The Little Sparrow,” was a French singer who became an icon of France during World War II. Born in 1915 on the streets near Belleville, she grew up in a bordello, eventually becoming a vaudevillian street performer in her teens with her acrobat father. It wasn’t until 1935, when she was finally discovered by a nightclub owner in Paris, that she began singing professionally and would shake up the world in the 40s with her voice. Her career, which lasted until her death in 63′, produced many hits, including her most well known “La Vie en Rose.”

For this edition of BBR, I’ve chosen my new Edith Piaf record, edithedith 2

Tonight! Why tonight we’re in beautiful Boulder, CO at the gorgeous Gold Hill Inn. Showtime is 9pm! See y’all there

0 Tunes from the Shapenote Song Book – Anywhere is Home

Touring is lots of driving, y’all. Lots of sitting, and lots of passing time. One of my favorite ways to spend some van hours has to be (dorktastically enough) mental sight singing, and the throwback Shapenote gospel hymnals have some good old time tunes to keep the brain sharp on a long drive. Here’s one that jumped out at me just earlier – it’s an appropriate title for travelers like ourselves. Take a glance at “Anywhere is Home”:

Ladies and gentlemen,

It’s been a while! We’re in the midst of DBRS’s Summer Tour 2015, and it’s time to get back on the SlyCam wagon. Not gonna lie, I’ve been a bit lazy collecting footage until recently, so you’ll have to bear with me. A lot has happened since the last entry, so get ready for some random. More to come as our two-month adventure continues!

Also, tonight we debut at Berwyn, IL’s world-renowned FitzGerald’s!  Come kick the night off with the Blackhawks/Ducks game on the big screen at 7, then put your dancing shoes on for a night with yours truly, starting around 9 pm.  Can you think of a better way to spend your Saturday?  I can’t… so come and get it!

Jim Self: legendary freelance musician who has played on over 1500 movie soundtracks and countless tv shows, composer, jazzcat badass.

Jim Self’s career is far too distinguished and extensive to get into here, but let it be known, Jim is the voice of the mothership in Close Encounters of the Third Kind. Nuff Said.

P.S. Gig tonight at the Hop Cat in Detroit, Michigan. Show starts at 10.

Hey y’all, it’s time for another edition of BBR.

Last week we played at the Continental Club in Houston, and across the street is a wonderful record shop – Sig’s Lagoon. They have vinyl everywhere and their prices are very good! Sigs-LagoonBarracudaSo while searching through their stuff, I found a beauty….

0524151643

That is New Orleans’ Sweet Emma and her Preservation Hall Jazz Band. Folks, this is the very first album Preservation Hall released, and it’s absolutely beautiful. It’s a live performance of the band recorded on October 18, 1964, at the Tyrone Guthrie Theatre in Minneapolis, Minnesota. I have to say that owning and reading through this album, I’ve become inspired for a new segment on the site. I haven’t yet thought of a name, but it’s about time I start sharing more about the history of my hometown and the people who’ve made it what it is now. Until then, please enjoy a cut from this record and be inspired!!

Tonight we’re partying in Grand Rapids, MI at the grand Founders Brewery! Showtime is 9pm, so get there early and get your taste buds going on their fine brew selection!
