Holy cow it’s been a while since our last BBR post! So for today, I’m going to put up a recent treasure I found while we were in Eugene, OR…

Yes folks, this is drummer porn at it’s finest featuring the swinging drum legends, Buddy Rich and Gene Krupa! I found this at a Salvation Army within 10 sec. of digging and couldn’t believe it! Just like that! Wow. Burnin’ Beat is a 1962 sequel to their 1955 album Krupa and Rich (which I now HAVE to find).

Now I could go on and on and on and on about the impact these two men had on jazz music, drumming, and showmanship, but that would take me all day and night. So instead I’m going to talk about one of the cooler features on this album, and that is on the backside of the sleeve..20150717_130700

That’s right, an entire breakdown of each song’s arrangements, y’all! I’ve never seen it before on any other record I own, and thank god too cause I’ve got a lot to study and this will make it much easier!

Tonight we’re in Newport, KY at The Southgate House Revival! Showtime is 9pm!

See y’all there ~ Boots

I’ve finally reached that point on the road where I’ve collected too many records and I have no more space for them in the van….oh well.

For this edition of BBR I’ve chosen a record from a little well known band called FUCKIN’ CREEDENCE ….actually it’s Creedence Clearwater Revival and the album is Cosmo’s Factory!

I picked up this album in a Salvation Army for maybe $2. I also bought a few VHS tapes for maybe $2 as well. It’s a good thing when you can find great things for hardly any money!

Tonight we’re rocking the walls in Flagstaff, AZ at The Green Room! Check it out!

Have you ever heard of Ms. Édith Piaf? Screen shot 2015-06-05 at 10.20.19 AM

Édith Piaf, also known as “The Little Sparrow,” was a French singer who became an icon of France during World War II. Born in 1915 on the streets near Belleville, she grew up in a bordello, eventually becoming a vaudevillian street performer in her teens with her acrobat father. It wasn’t until 1935, when she was finally discovered by a nightclub owner in Paris, that she began singing professionally and would shake up the world in the 40s with her voice. Her career, which lasted until her death in 63′, produced many hits, including her most well known “La Vie en Rose.”

For this edition of BBR, I’ve chosen my new Edith Piaf record, edithedith 2

Tonight! Why tonight we’re in beautiful Boulder, CO at the gorgeous Gold Hill Inn. Showtime is 9pm! See y’all there

Hey y’all, it’s time for another edition of BBR.

Last week we played at the Continental Club in Houston, and across the street is a wonderful record shop – Sig’s Lagoon. They have vinyl everywhere and their prices are very good! Sigs-LagoonBarracudaSo while searching through their stuff, I found a beauty….

0524151643

That is New Orleans’ Sweet Emma and her Preservation Hall Jazz Band. Folks, this is the very first album Preservation Hall released, and it’s absolutely beautiful. It’s a live performance of the band recorded on October 18, 1964, at the Tyrone Guthrie Theatre in Minneapolis, Minnesota. I have to say that owning and reading through this album, I’ve become inspired for a new segment on the site. I haven’t yet thought of a name, but it’s about time I start sharing more about the history of my hometown and the people who’ve made it what it is now. Until then, please enjoy a cut from this record and be inspired!!

Tonight we’re partying in Grand Rapids, MI at the grand Founders Brewery! Showtime is 9pm, so get there early and get your taste buds going on their fine brew selection!

Oh man, things are really sounding big and bad in the Dirty Bourbon camp with our new friend Adam on the Bone!! So for this edition of BBR, I’m busting out…

Mr. Fats Domino’s Blueberry Hill!

0502150858

I recently purchased this beauty in Pittsburgh, PA at Dave’s Music Mine (it was down the street from our gig at Club Cafe) and have been listening to it the past few days while we were home. The record is in great shape and it’s got all the hits on there! But it gets even better…all of the tracks are live!! That’s right! Live! The crowd’s cheering before and after each song adds so much to the performances.

Unfortunately though y’all, I’m not able to find any cuts from the album online and I haven’t filmed the record playing at home…so you’re just gonna have to make due with these other cuts of the “Fat Man” in the meantime.

Tonight, we’re in Alpharetta, GA at the beautiful Matilda’s! Showtime is 8:30pm and we’ve got two powerhouse sets ready to go!

See y’all there! ~Boots

2) We have a new 6th member! Adam Lessnau will be joining us as a guest trombonist though the remainder of our Important Things Humans Should Know tour. The brass is booming big now baby. Come dig his chops tonight at the Foundry, or one of our other many tour dates on the left sidebar.

Noah

3) Noah’s 10 year beard is getting out of control. He’s only 9 months in, and it already covers bowties and has a tiny refrigerator cabinet were he keeps a conservative assortment of 8 oz sodas. Somebody make it stop…

Hello folks, it’s time for another installment of BBR!

This week I’m pulling out another new record from my birthday bag and going with the classic Rolling Stones’ album, “Sticky Fingers!”

0427151304

Released in 1971, it’s considered the Stones’ best album having gone triple platinum with hits like “Wild Horses,” “Brown Sugar,” and “Can’t You Hear Me Knocking.” This edition I have features the controversial “zipper” that when unzipped reveals and tiny pair of whitey-tighties compliments of Andy Warhol. (This zipper would eventually be changed because it caused damage to the vinyl during shipment) It’s a wild cover, one that VH1 named the “No. 1 Greatest Album Cover” of all time.

So I hope enjoy this album, I know I certainly do…

Tonight we’re at Cafe Nine in New Haven, CT. The Devil Plays Poker opens up at 8pm. Dirty Bourbon is set to follow! We’ll see y’all there.

~Boots.

* Shoutout to Mike and Amanda for this record. Good people in North Carolina y’all, even if they are Panthers fans..

For today’s edition of BBR, I’m picking my new copy of Rage Against the Machine’s self-titled album. I received this record as a birthday gift last week, and I just can’t stop looking at it.

This vinyl edition marks the 20th Anniversary of the initial album release. As many RATM fans know, the album cover for this release features the historical photograph of the self-immolation of Thich Quang Durc. However, this new XX edition of the album features the image on the vinyl itself.

So because it is Earth Day and because people need a real swift kick in the ass when it comes to caring for our planet, I’ve chosen this album. I hope it lights a fire in you today.

Tonight we’re in Brooklyn, NY at the Brooklyn Bowl opening for folks rockers Cabinet! Show starts at 8pm.

See y’all there. ~Boots.

Happy Record Store Day Everybody!!

For this edition of BBR I’m gonna share with y’all what some amazing friends gave me last night for Mein Geburtstag.
20150418-142851.jpg

Amazing friends indeed, that’s Rage Against the Machine’s self-titled album (XX edition), Jack DeJohnette’s Pictures, Rolling Stones’ Sticky Fingers (with zipper action), and The Great Adventures of Slick Rick! I mean does it get much better than that? ….. No, it doesn’t.

So for today’s featured album I’m sticking with another hip-hop classic, “The Great Adventures of Slick Rick!”

Tonight we’re blowing up the great GREY EAGLE in Asheville, NC. Hank West and The Smoking Hots are laying it down at 9 and Dirty Bourbon will set it ablaze at 10.

See y’all there. Boots

For this next edition of BBR, I’ll be sharing with y’all a hip-hop classic in my collection – Paul’s Boutique by the Beastie Boys.

vinyl

Noah gave me this record a few years back on my birthday and it’s definitely one of my prized collections.

Easily one of the most influential hip-hop albums of all time, the amount of samples used on this album is astounding and credit must be given to the Dust Brothers who used over 105 songs to create the backing tracks. (They were even sued by the Beatles!)

So check out the album that Miles Davis claims to have never grown tired listening to.

Tonight we’re at Jaxlive in Jacksonville, Fl with Dr. SirBrother and Brent Byrd & The Suitcase Gypsies.

Doors open at 8pm. More info HERE

See yall there. ~Boots.
