0 Gold Hill CO, a friend of New Orleans

Tonight the Dirty Bourbon River Show kicks off our Colorado tour in the beautiful mountain town of Gold Hill.

20140718-155438.jpg
We drove straight up the dirt road side of a mountain and plunged straight into downtown. As we walked into the venue, a collective “Wahhh!” rang out amongst the band as we saw this hanging up behind the stage:

As it turns out, this town was not only home to, but was once presided over by a New Orleans music legend. That’s right, in the late 70s, New Orleans’ favorite washboard player was the mayor of a beautiful Colorado mountain town!

Washboard Chaz is a monster of a musician and a joy to be around, Dirty Bourbon has had the pleasure of sharing the stage with him and the Tin Men (our favorite trio ever) numerous times in New Orleans.

So come on out to the Gold Hill Inn and help us bring New Orleans back to Gold Hill, and pay tribute to our friend who’s hundreds of miles away!
Show starts around 9:00 right in the middle of town at the historic Gold Hill Inn

0 Blues you oughta know: Balkan edition

Music is a universal language. This video is proof that the visual differences in humans are trivial and shallow. Underneath it all our similarities far outweigh our differences, the brass bands of the world are a perfect example.

When I watch this i can’t help but be reminded of the countless brass band shows I’ve seen in New Orleans. From the snare and bass drum setup and the lead trumpet solos, to the intricate backing parts and pure energy onstage, the 5,000 miles that separate New Orleans and The Balkan Peninsula seem to disappear.
When you look into the history of brass bands you start to better understand the parallels and what causes them. Both Balkan and New Orleans brass band spawn from a tradition of military style brass ensembles. In Southeastern Europe the military bands date back to the height of the Ottoman Empire. Players from the military bands would learn to play the folk music of their home lands on their brass instruments, thus spawning the music we know today a Balkan Brass.
A very similar thing happened in New Orleans when old instruments from military brass bands and Sousa style marching bands found their way to Congo square, mixing with the native sounds of Africa and the rhythms of New Orleans to create the brass bands we know and love today.

In other news…

Tonight and tonight only! The Dirty Bourbon River Show is back in Knoxville Tennessee at the palace of taps and pizza known as Barley’s!. Show starts at 10:00, come get some pizza before!

So we’ve got some bad news. It is with deepest regrets that I inform you we will not be able to make it to Philadelphia to play at the World Cafe tonight with the Soul Rebels. life on the road can be pretty bumpy sometimes and today we ran into an axel breaker.
Most importantly we are all in one piece and will be back on our normal schedule as of tomorrow. We will most certainly be back to Philly as soon as they’ll have us, and anybody who was coming out to see DBRS tonight should definitely go see the incredible Soul Rebels. If you are not familiar with the innovative stylings of New Orleans own Soul Rebels Brass Band then check out this highly informative and badass video they put together.

So make sure to go out and get some sweet sounds of New Orleans tonight Philadelphia, even though Dirty Bourbon couldn’t make it. We’ll get em’ next time!

We’ve been keeping our lips sealed about this for quite some time now, and are super excited to finally announce the big news: today we’re launching a Kickstarter funding campaign to help produce our brand new studio album (coming in the spring of 2015)! Producing a top-notch record is a very costly endeavor. We want the end result to be something of true quality and as special as our fans are to us. Head over to our project page on Kickstarter to learn more about the new album and how any funds raised will be used to create the record…plus, we’ve got some pretty fun backer rewards to peruse as well! Think backstage meet and greets, free digital and/or physical copies of the new album, shout outs in the liner notes and other such goodies. Thank you for your continued support of our creative process. We couldn’t do it without you and greatly appreciate your consideration to pitch in on the project and help spread the word!
