With another Tuesday comes another sultry, smooth Dirty Bourbon burlesque residency as part of the Big Busk! at The Wolf’s Den (828 S. Peters) tonight! If you have yet to make it to one of these shows, then Buster you’re one of two things. Dead or you let your Tuesdays at work get you way too down. Come sit and hoot and holler for the lovely and mysterious Sin Lillies Burlesque Revue and the boys and maybe enjoy a shot of bourbon or two, it’s almost hump day anyway.

Tonight will be a little extra special as the boys welcome Bootsy back from his recent mission trip to Belize. Much props and many thank yous to Chris Guccione of Booty Trove and Bill Fletcher of 27 Lights for helping to hold down the fort while Bootsy was away.

The only known photo of the Beast

On unrelated note, we bought a van. Scary? Yea, why wouldn’t it be? Exhilarating? Even more so. Here’s a shot of it, our lovely van model Anna and Big Charlie knew it was being taken at the time. Noah did not.

0 Harvey Pekar 1939-2010

The loser lost its winner on Monday. Harvey Pekar died at the age of 70 on Monday. Author of the seminal American Splendor, Pekar depicted our lives through his. Splendor was the catharsis for any one who works 9-5, Monday to Friday with just the hope of covering that weeks bills and come back the next week to do the same.

It could happen to any of us

Harvey Pekar 1939-2010

I remember being introduced to Pekar in the same way many have been in recent years due to the release of the film of the same name starring Paul Giamatti and being instantly enamored. Being a touch of a comic book nerd myself (I have pretty much every Batman comic book from the early 90’s) I was struck how Harvey was able to instantly make a hero out of himself, a man working a dead-end, mundane job in a sleepy Midwest industrial town.

He took what adults relent to and what young men and women struggle against and made it beautiful. He reminded us of the poignancy of everyday life. He was even quoted as saying to the Cleveland Plain Dealer in 1994 that his work was about reflecting  “a series of day-after-day activities that have more influence on a person than any spectacular or traumatic events. It’s the 99 percent of life that nobody ever writes about.” The loss of Harvey Pekar is truly the loss of a free spirit whose rebellion may have been quieter than Thompson’s but it was certainly as crucial if only for the work it left behind.

Here’s a link to a piece on Pekar’s death published in his hometown Plain Dealer out of Cleveland. Read it here.

0 Something Special

What we’ve got in store for you is nothing short of that. Special. DBRS has the proudest of pleasures of opening up for Bob Log III, a one man band who carries the tagline “My Shit is Perfect” tonight (7/12) at One Eyed Jacks. And perfect it is my friends, believe you me, that it is.

With a perfect combination of determination, gusto, and rollicking jams, Bob Log III is a force. Not even a force that is qualifiable like the force of nature or the force of one of Muhammad Ali’s punches in his prime. Bob Log transcends all of this to be known simply as a force. Whilst strumming away at his guitar and stomping his kick drum, you may find two  lovely ladies in this mans lap. Oh, and my man wears a fighter jet pilot’s helmet while he makes everybody move to his hip shaking, head moving music.

His shit IS perfect.

This show will be something to experience. If not for yourself, then certainly for the generations to come. They will ask questions about this international man of mystery. Won’t you want to be able to answer them accurately?

So the nitty gritty details are as follows:  One Eyed Jack’s, 615 Toulouse Street  NOLA, tonight July 12th.

Doors will open up at 9pm and cover is $10.

I guess that settles what you’ll be doing with your Monday night. See ya there!

And you thought I was kidding

Here it is! The Free Love EP, a love story told in three acts. Don’t let the title deceive you, it’s not all about free love. it is a love EP that is free. Free as in there is no cost to make this newest hot slice of Dirty Bourbon magic yours to play at will. Go download it on our bandcamp site, cuddle up next to whomever it is you call yours and press play.

Also, it is Big Charlie’s birthday today, (yes this was all planned to happen in conjunction with our ringleader adding another year of wisdom under his belt), so if you happen to come to our show tonight (also Free) at Banks Street Bar located 4401 Banks Street NOLA give Charlie a holler, it would make his birthday.

Land of the free, right? We’re free to work and live as we please. We can live in any neighborhood, work any job, love whomever we choose. However this freedom is not free. And I don’t mean that in necessarily the same way your typical chart topping country act means it. I mean that the citizenry has worked for and earned it. Freedom is a right that is earned by tireless work and an unwavering focus on one goal. Freedom. So that we can walk the streets as we choose, buy and sell as we choose. But why work for freedom? Why push ourselves so hard to have the life we want for ourselves?
