Only one week to go until our greatest fxxking show yet. Yessiree ladies and gentlemen, we haven’t been this excited in a while – got a huge one planned for you ~ its going down like this:

Saturday, April 2nd

The Blue Nile on Frenchmen

Show kicks off at 10pm with our dear friends from Greensboro, NC, the one and only Holy Ghost Tent Revival. This 6 piece string/brass extravaganza is the perfect mixture of foot-stompin’ love makin’ folk/roots/blues/dixieland/rock and more. Say hello:

Then, at 11pm, yours truly will be taking the stage, performing for you our newest album – Volume Two. Songs you’ve never heard, old familiars, and everything in between. Good friends, bourbon pours, fireballs and more. So excited to be sharing this newest one with you. We sincerely believe it is our greatest work yet:

And just when you thought it couldn’t get any better, guess who’ll be closing out the evening? None other than New Orleans’ own the Tin Men. Washboard Chaz, Matt Perrine, Alex McMurray – these cats kill:

Tickets are $10, $8 if you click “attending” on the Facebook event, and free for those who pre-purchase the album on our Bandcamp site.

If you can’t make the New Orleans Show (which you should, even if you live 300 miles away) you can catch us and Holy Ghost in Baton Rouge on Thursday, Mobile on Friday, and Lafayette an Sunday with Chubby Carrier.

Don’t miss this one. It is going to be our greatest fxxking show yet.

The Dirty Bourbon River Show released their 3rd studio album, Volume Two

We just couldn’t wait. We began allowing worldwide digital download of Volume Two tonight at 12:01 AM CST on dbrs.bandcamp.com

We priced the album – temporarily in this unannounced early interim period –  at $20. We did this because the last one (Free Love) was completely free, and this new online bundle includes some sweet extra goodies ~ in addition to the full-quality download you get a special digisheet of the artwork, liner notes & lyrics + your choice of either:

(a) a spot on the guest list at our CD release party in New Orleans and a free, reserved, and autographed physical copy of the album waiting for you at the merch table that night

or, for you out-of-town-folks:

(b) an autographed copy mailed to your house free-of-charge on the day of the CD release party + a sticker and a personalized note from the band.

Ya, that’s a whole lot of stuff packed up in this sweet little baby:

This is our best work yet

Then, on April 2nd (Volume Two’s official release date) the album will drop to $9.99 for digital download (without the extra goodies) and will be available on iTunes and Amazon as well.

That night we will be performing our new album at the Blue Nile on Frenchmen Street in New Orleans. Musical guests will include:

—- The Tin Men and Holy Ghost Tent Revival —-

Both of these bands are incredible, and we are extremely lucky to have them play with us.

This unprecedented 3 ring circus will start at 10pm and will be $10 at the door for those who did not pre-purchase the album. The Blue Nile only holds 300 people, so I’d grab your goodies and get your spot while they last.

For those in Baton Rouge, Lafayette, and Mobile, we’ve got shows in your town that weekend with Holy Ghost Tent Revival as well – check our sidebar.

Whether you live in or around New Orleans and plan on attending the live show, or you live somewhere else and plan on just listening to or downloading the album, we hope that you enjoy this new piece of art as much as we did making it.

We are extremely proud to bring these new sounds to your ears, and anxious for your feedback.

Enjoy!
Sincerely,

~ The Dirty Bourbon River Show

P.S. Also, apparently, there are some golden tickets floating around…

0 Blues you ough’ta know with Big Charlie: Sleepy John Estes

The Narcoleptic Bluesman

At the early age of six,  John Adams Estes was blinded in one eye during an unfortunate sandlot baseball incident.  He later lost vision in the other eye, allowing him to join the ranks of iconic blind bluesmen such as; Blind Lemon Jefferson, Blind Willie McTell, Blind Willie Johnson, Sonny Terry, and Blind Boy Fuller.

Obviously, Being Blind wasn’t the only Obstacle Sleepy John had to endure. His nickname spurs from his tendency to fall asleep while sitting on a stool or even standing up.  These unintentional naps were later diagnosed as Narcolepsy, which is caused by blood pressure irregularity.

While there are no actual accounts (that I could find) of Sleepy falling asleep on-stage, I’d have to imagine  when he was touring around the South playing every night, it happened at some point.  Wouldn’t that be a site?

Folk Art by J.D. Snipe (click Sleepy to see more)

Estes was mentioned in the memoirs of Big Bill Broonzy as having judged a guitar contest in Chicago.  Memphis Minnie had just recently moved to town, and found herself in a guitar duel with Big Bill.  In a glorious upset Minnie beat Bill Broonzy and became wildly popular in the city’s blues circuit, all thanks to her fellow Tennessean, Sleepy . Whenever Sleepy John and his band were in Chicago they were regularly hired by Al Capone (who was crazy about the blues) and his people to play private parties and events. Now that sounds like a right proper good time to me.

1 Blues you ough’ta know with Big Charlie: Skip James and the Bentonia School

  • 02/08/2011

Skip James was a true Blues-man, born and trained in Bentonia, Mississippi.  Bentonia is quiet little town outside of the Mississippi Delta with a rich history of producing some of the best Blues guitar players/singers.

While each one was as unique as the next, the Blues-men from this town all seemed to play music with an eerie, depressing feel to it, and always in minor keys.  Pair that with the Skip James signature three-finger picking guitar style and an array of unique tunings (mostly in open E minor and even down to D minor)  and you’ve got the Bentonia “school” of the Blues.

Here’s an example of some Bentonia Blues: Skip James singing and playing “Devil Got My Woman”

Hows it going everybody, Big Charlie here.  This is the first of many Blues you Ough’ta know segments so keep an ear out, and put on your stompin’ boots

Jack White and I share a favorite song.  It’s good to know there’s somebody else out there still paying homage to the forefathers.

The video is from “It Might Get Loud” a fantastic rockumentary starring two incredible guitarists…and the Edge.  Seriously though, go check it out, it’s some great Rock’N’Roll motivation.
