Started With Three Girls to Cemetery and All Got Lost.
*  *  *  *  *
Three little black-eyed girls, who could not have been over 6 years old, all garbed in white dresses, in harmony with Easter, were found near Twelfth and Washington streets yesterday afternoon by Sergeant James Jadwin. The officer’s attention was first attracted when he noticed that the fourth member of the company, a boy about 8 years old, was crying.

“We’re all lost,” he managed to tell the officer.

“Yes, we are lost,” said the older of the three girls. “We live way over by Fifth and Harrison streets. We were going to the graveyard to put flowers on the graves, but Jimmie don’t know the way.”

Sergeant Jadwin surmised at once that they were Italian children, though it would have been impossible to have told by their manner of speech. Jimmie cried until the quartette reached the station, where he recognized the locality. The children were soon surrounded by the officers, who were more than amused by the oldest girl’s plain English, and her denunciation of Jimmie.

“He told us he would take us to the graveyard,” she said, her black eyes snapping. “Then he took us away and away,” and she dramatized the description by motioning with the hands the direction which they had taken. “Then, he’s a cry-baby, too,” she continued, “for as soon as he saw he was lost, he began to cry.”

“Can you write your name?” asked James Cummings, the telephone man.

In answer, the child took the officer’s pencil, and, with childish scrawl which was perfectly legible, she wrote the names of the three others, as well as her own name.

“Maggie Saoa” was her own name, she said, as she showed her skill to the officer. Her two companions, she said, were her cousins, Marie and Josie Saoa, who all lived in the same flat at 532 Harrison street. The boy was identified as James Scarcello, who lives at 536 Harrison street. Thee children were taken home by the wagon driver.

The Bonzo Dog Doo Wha? Band… yes, the Bonzo Dog Doo Dah Band ~ It’ll spin you round ladies and gents, put a real dent in your sensibilities. Step right up, sip on this silly juice:

Was tipped off to these wild folk by Bob Boilen of NPR’s All Songs Considered, and they have had a smile on my face for the last few hours now. Friends of Sgt. Pepper and the Flying Circus, the Bonzo Dog Doo Dah Band are all about The Show. Feeling down? This’ll spike up that frown:

Hope you enjoy! ~ Noah

Big Texas Blues

Albert Collins

Albert Collins showed the world just how powerful the Blues could be.  His guitar sound was humble and brash, and completely unique.  Collins played with no pick using his own “Attack”  style of fingerpicking.  He mostly played Telecasters in open minor tunings to create his incredible sustain and control.

Take a listen for yourself

(it gets crazy at 7:00 in if your low on free time)

Big Leagues

Albert Collins was at the forefront of a Blues revolution in the 70’s and 80’s. playing alongside such greats as Robert Cray, John Lee Hooker, and BB King, together they brought Blues into the spotlight once again.  Johnny Copeland, Robert Cray, and Mr. Collins even won a Grammy in 1983 for their collaborative album entitled “Showdown”(Highly recommended listening). Collins’ playing was so inspiring that composer John Zorn created a 13 minute Blues Suite to feature him.

My personal favorite Albert Collins Tune

0 What’s Going On in New Orleans Tonight

What's going on in the live music scene of New Orleans on Friday, April 8th, 2011

  • 04/08/2011

  • · Uncategorized

Finally, for like the first time in for effen eva, we don’t have to play a show on a Friday night. So we’ll be hittin’ the town, catching some of New Orlean’s finest. Here’s what’s going down in the Big Easy tonight:

Bywater cats, catch either Johnny Sketch & the Dirty Notes (Loyola Alum’s, Rock mixed w. Strings, Horns, bawdy singing, a damn good time) at the Blue Nile, or the Other Planets (Psychedelic Strange Rock, peep their video here) + Felix at the Always Lounge. Both of these shows start at 10pm. If your hoping for bedroom boogie by 10 & looking for a little earlier entertainment with your pretty little lady, go see Kermit (yeah, I’m pretty sure I don’t need to describe Kermit) at Rock’n’Bowl at 8:30.

Kirk Joseph, one of the greats joing the Break Science show at Tip's tonight

Pick of the Night: Break Science at Tipitina’s, 10pm. This show will feature Chali2na (MC from Jurassic 5, an OG, if you’ve never heard Quality Control, do your research) and Kirk Joseph (Susie player from Dirty Dozen, literally one of the best Tubists in the world). Opening the show will be Gypsyphonic Disko. I am particular interested in this. A collaboration between Galactic’s sax player, Ben Ellmen, and DJ Quickly Mart, Gypsyphonic Disko melds gypsy and Balkan horn and chordophone lines with New Orleans grooves and hip hop beats. Peep their tracks here:

Even if you can’t catch the show or don’t live in New Orleans, figured y’all would find this interesting, as it is in the similar vein of DBRS. Enjoy, & hope you have a delicious Friday!

Other Great Shows Upcoming Up:

Man Man at One Eyed Jack’s on May 2nd

Wanda Jackson at Tipitina’s on May 22nd

Man, still resting up after this past weekend’s CD release run. Had so much fun, met some new people, and saw some old friends. Have you checked out the new record yet? It’s available pretty much everywhere for only $9.99:

Man, look at that Bassface. CD Release party, 4/2 @ the Blue Nile

Tell your friends, tell your mama, we’re real proud of this one. We’ll be touring it all around America this summer, which I’ll tell you about in the minute.

In the meantime, what’s going on for Dirty Bourbon? What are we up to as of late? What’ve we got for that big ol’ horizon up ahead? Well, I’ll tell ya:

For the rest of this month we won’t be playing any shows. We’ll be training our new bari sax player – Matt “Slyfox” Thomas – and finish writing the songs for Volume III (our next album – the Old-Timey Afropop Gibberish Junction – is already written & tracked, just finishing up overdubs & mixing). Then, in May, we’ll kick off on the 5th for a super duper Cinco de Mayo partay with Glasgow & Vox & the Hound, followed by a month long tour on the eastern seaboard to support the release of Volume II – catch us with Blair Cimmins, Megan Jean & Holy Ghost Tent Revival. Then, come summertime, nother big NOLA show, then back to the east coast for another month. Then, this fall, we’ll be heading west to Colorado for another month tour! And then, we’ll come back home & release our 4th album – Old-Timey Afropop Gibberish Junction. Expect Volume III sometime around spring 2012.

So yup, we’ve got a lot of big things planned for the future.

And don’t forget – tell everyone you know about the new album! This beast’s spreading like wildfire, let’s keep that fire hot.

Aight? Aight.
