Around the world, there are those who transcend the boundaries of mere mortals and achieve that which was previously thought impossible. The great Matti Laiho is among their ranks. A composer, arranger, as well as an incredible tubist, Matti Laiho shows everyone what is possible with enough focus and hard work. Not only does he play Carnival of Venice, one of the more technical trumpet showpieces, he plays it on a sousaphone! His virtuosity and musicality is the stuff of legends and should be known by all. Tuba players are an interesting bunch. We play the biggest, heaviest, most badass instrument known to man. Few outside the tuba world realize this fundamental fact. There is nothing more heavy metal than a tuba, unless of course, that tuba is also on fire. Here are some badasses that decided to educate the masses on the pure majesty of tuba.

3 Fire Tuba!
Fire Tuba!
Years ago, when we first started to play North Carolina, I met propane flame effects artist, Beyond Joy. He wanted to set my sousaphone on fire. I was intrigued by the proposition so we began talking about design. It would have to be a simple to operate, mobile, and above all, safe.
The system would have two major parts, a pilot light and a propane poofer. The pilot light stays lit the entire time the system is on, and provides the initial flame for a second, larger blast of propane. Once Beyond had a basic design, all we needed was a few days to build and test.
Earlier this week, the stars aligned and we found some free time to work. The first day, Beyond fabricated the pilot light using copper tubing and brass fittings.
On the second day, Beyond fabricated the poofer.
With both pieces together, it was time for a test.
I say it was a rousing success. I cannot thank Beyond Joy enough. This fire tuba system is as beautiful as it is functional.
