0 The History of the Hula Girl

Just where did the Dashboard Hula Girl come from? When did it tip and become the retro icon that it is today? We have one ourselves – her name is Rita – and we’ve always wondered, and so we decided to do a little research…

We start to see the Hula Girl herself entering into American iconoclasm as early as the 1900’s as a symbol of tourism in Hawaii. Then in the 1920’s and 30s the earliest dolls begin to surface, usually made of bisque, or redware – a claylike material. In the 1950’s we start to see what is closest to the modern version – plastic – fauxgrass skirt, often holding a ukulele or doing the hulu hand thing. The large amount of American soldiers in and out of Hawaii during WWII helped spread her popularity stateside. Then surfer kids and beach bums in Cali brought her into national light, and thus the Dashboard Hulu Girl became the American pop star that she is today.

And there you have it folks. Show tonight in Frostburg, MD at Dante’s. Downbeat at 10pm. Don’t charge any porn to the room. Free tibet. Ad Astra per Apsera.

François Rabbath 1931-
Classical Upright Pedagogue/Solist/Composer/Badass

20140902-131831.jpg
To start things off, here’s a clip of François being a badass/throwing an upright out of a window.

Born in Aleppo, Syria into a musical family François, taught himself bass at the age of thirteen. He continued studying at the Paris Conservatory where he quickly surpassed his teachers and established his solo career. His three-volume double bass method, Nouvelle technique de la contrebasse, smashed the previous technical limitations of bass, became standard reading for bassists worldwide, and started generations of new virtuosi.

A short composition by Rabbath called Iberique Peninsulare, performed by Volkan Orhan.

P.S. Gig tonight at 10th Avenue Burrito in beautiful Belmar, New Jersey. Show starts at 8:30.

Bobby Rush originally caught my ear with his New Orleans style, but his comedic flair was what kept me listening. These song just can’t help but put a smile on your face.

Ladies and Gentlemen,

That’s right, folks, it’s time for another episode of SlyCam!  Our journey this time takes us from Oregon, across Colorado, and all the way to Michigan and Indiana.  We found some more interesting stops along the way and get to introduce you to one of our many wonderful hosts from across the country, Claudia!  Hope you dig it.

Also, tonight we debut at the ritzy Pittsburg Winery with master of sounds, DJ Pandemic!  Do you like wine?  I like wine… like a lot.  Doors are at 8, show kicks off at 9 with DJ Pandemic, and we hit the stage around 9:45.  Till then…
