0 Kumite Pow Pow: A Photo-Retrospective

Hey y’all! It’s our final gig of the September tour tonight, and with our wheels about to hit the road southbound, I can’t imagine a better, more cliche way to look back on the past month in summary than a good ole’ photo dump. Here’s a behind-the-scenes glance into the Dirty Bourbon River Show’s Midwest adventures :

Somewhere in Tennessee, you can buy gasoline and fireworks on the same receipt. Seems legit.

Note to self: Evangelical Christians do not always make good neighbors for busking.

If you find yourself in St. Louis, Broadway Oyster Bar does not disappoint. Plus, alcoholic root beer in a tall boy? Worth your time.

Possibly the nicest Men’s Room Graffitti I’ve encountered. #SandraLOVE

 Where we’re going, we don’t need roads…

Merch table selfie! This is a fairly accurate snapshot…

Made from a casting of Christopher Walken’s actual face.

  Cleveland from the double rooftop

Bootsy returning to ‘from whence he came’.

Ahhhhhhhh, look how young we all were. Alas, the clock ticks, the world spins, and the beers get emptied – specifically, the ones at Short’s Brewing Company in Bellaire, MI tonight! We’ll be playing the tunes and showing the moves at 8:30pm – the show is free and the beer is good, some come and help us end the tour right.

Michigan tonight, Louisiana tomorrow. Who knows what October brings? Stay tuned to find out where in the world we’ll end up next (Spoiler Alert: North Carolina, Colorado, Nevada – I’m lookin’ at you!!!).

Until the next one,
Adam

Michigan is home to some amazing musicians of all different genres. One of my favorite singers of all times, and biggest inspirations is the Queen herself, Miss Aretha Franklin. She taught me a lot about respecting myself, and demanding it from others. May she get you dancing on this Friday! We head to Petoskey, MI today to knock the socks off the folxs there at the Crooked Tree Arts Center. Doors open at 7:30, show starts at 8! It’s gonna be a good time as we test out a new venue! Enjoy some tunes from Miss Franklin below!

Thurl Ravenscroft: Basso Profundo, actor, greatest voice in the world.

20150923-115701.jpg

You may not think you know who this man with the incredible name is, but I guarantee that you grew up listening to his unbelievably deep, resonant voice. Best known for singing “You’re a mean one Mr. Grinch” and being the voice of Tony the Tiger and countless Disney characters, he also sang backup for Elvis Presley, Bing Crosby and some of the biggest stars of his time. Unique and instantly recognizable, Thurl Ravenscroft is a true badass.

P.S. Gig tonight at the Music Box in Cleveland, OH. Show starts at 8.

What up what up, y’all?! We’re back for another installment of BBR and today I’m feeling like some good ole’ ROCK is necessary!! So I’m coming at you with the UK Metal band MORE and their album BLOOD AND THUNDER!!

more-blood-and-thunder2MORE hit the scene in the 1980s part of the new wave of British Heavy Metal going on then. Blood and Thunder is their second and final album released in 1982. I picked this bad boy up in Knoxville, TN a year or so back at a store called Hot Horse, and it’s definitely a great addition to the collection. The cover, featuring lead guitar monster Kenny Cox, is what immediately sold me on it. *Fun Fact* The lineup for this album had also changed during the recording session and vocalist, Mick Stratton, and drummer, A.J. Burton, were brought in. Burton’s drumming on the album is perfect and Stratton, who came in at the last minute, wrote and recorded completely new lyrics and vocal parts.

So without further needless words, check out Blood and Thunder and have yourself a righteous Sunday afternoon!!

Tonight we’re in Bloomington, Indiana at the Player’s Pub. Showtime is 9pm. See y’all there! ~ Boots

0 Tunes from the New Orleans Trad Book – St. Louis Blues

The old story tells us about an accomplished trumpet player, walking the streets of St. Louis late one night. As he wandered the downtown, he encountered a woman, torn up and saddened over her husband’s unscrupulous behavior. She wailed, “Ma man’s got a heart like a rock cast in de sea”.

The trumpet player bearing witness to all this? That man was W. C. Handy, an early jazz legend who stands right up with Buddy Bolden and Louis Armstrong when discussing the forebearers and trailblazers of traditional jazz. To say that he wrote the book is no exaggeration – that very story is the genesis of a song that moved a nation. W. C. Handy’s St. Louis Blues (published 1914) is among the earliest of jazz tunes to be published, and remains a standard among New Orleans traditional jazz musicians still today. In fact, this song became so popular among the 1920’s American populous, it even inspired a specific set of dance moves – today, we call it the foxtrot.

Let’s take a closer look at what makes this tune so unique:

It’s a pretty simple song, with just an A section and a B section, the B section being your typical 12 bar blues changes. So why all the fuss? The answer lies in two key components – a Latin time feel in the A section, and a parallel key modulation between A and B.

Let’s start at the top. The whole A feel establishes a strong Latin pulse, moving in a tango- style pattern that accentuates straight-not-swung articulations. Beat four in particular features two even eighth notes that drive the progression forward, again similar to a tango-style accent pattern. This was a groundbreaking composition in this respect, as the majority of jazz at the time would not have strayed this far from the traditional feel.

Secondly, the modulation. While the A section, mostly a i-V7-V7-i motion, establishes G minor tonality throughout, the final chord of A (D7) gets turned on it’s head a bit when the B resolves it major, to a G7 rather than the anticipated Gm. This moves the blues section of the tune into a whole new key signature, which keeps the listener’s ears fresh and spices up the variety even further between the Aand B sections.

To check out a recording of the tune being played waaaaaay back, follow this link. I challenge you musicians out there to do a playalong, and bring this old standard back to life.

Tonight we hit St. Louis ourselves, well over a hundred years since W. C. Handy hit pay dirt with his catchy tune in the very same city. We’ll try to catch some of his magic over at the Broadway Oyster Bar – the show starts at 10pm and $8 gets you an evening of entertainment with yours truly. Hope to see you there!
