It’s happening, it’s here!!! Finally, after years of talking about it, we’re sharing the stage with members (Vapors) of Morphine!! Honestly, this a post that our wordsmith Sly should be writing up seeing as he introduced us to their music, but I shall do my best to convey how psyched we are about it!!

……….Actually….I won’t……..

Instead here’s this…dig it!! Listen to it and decide for yourselves!!

We love this band and are honored to be sharing the stage tonight with them tonight at D.B.A. on Frenchmen St.

A lot of firsts tonight and we hope you can join us!!

0 Double Saxophone Goodness

Ladies and gentlemen,

As a saxophonist and improvisational musician, there’s so much to learn!  From scale variations to rhythms to vocabulary to chord progressions to flashy extended techniques and on and on and on, any musician worth his/her salt will agree that it’s imperative to always push further and to break through your barriers.  Of the flashy little tricks in my personal arsenal, though, one of the biggest crowd pleasers proves over and over to be the double saxophone.  I have a hell of a good time doing it, but I’m far from the first!

Some of my biggest saxophone heroes have pulled it off, including Jeff Coffin and the legendary Rahsaan Roland Kirk, but the only other musician I’ve seen pull of the labor-intensive bari-tenor combo is the great Dana Colley of Morphine.  Finding that band was a revelation to me as a musician and specifically as a baritone saxophonist, and it looks like we at the Dirty Bourbon River Show will have the honor of sharing the stage with the Vespers of Morphine (original members of Morphine with the slide bass and guitar stylings of the talented and capable Jeremy Lyons) on 5/30 at New Orleans’ own d.b.a!

I’ve seen them live, and it’s the real deal, people.  If you’re in the area, do yourselves a favor and come check this show out, because I’m completely stoked for it!  Not that you need any convincing, but if you want to see one of the videos that enlightened me to the greatness of the bari-tenor combo, dig this video from one of Morphine’s performances from back in the mid-90s.  You’re welcome!

Also, tonight marks the end of our little run out in the Midwest, so if you’re in the area, come party with us in Detroit at one of the classiest of classy jazz joints I’ve ever been to, Cliff Bell’s!  We kick off at 9:30 with three full sets of awesome.  Be there!

1 Reach Out (I’ll Be There)

  • · History

Not too long ago I was reading an interview piece in Offbeat magazine, which is a local music magazine in New Orleans, and one of the questions the interviewer asked was, “what was the first tune you heard as a child?” Now I can’t recall the answer in the article, but I can tell you what my answer would’ve been. I sat there at our table and remembered the first time I recognized music and how it affected me.

My mother is the reason for my rhythm. She introduced me to Motown and Cuban music and Rock n Roll and the “Cha-Cha.” She may not know it, but the day she put on The Four Tops – Reach Out (I’ll Be There), she changed my world.

As a kid I had never heard anything so epic. That haunting opening line that gallops and snaps into a perfectly paced rockin’ groove, the melodies working within the instruments,  and of course the voices – I thought Levi Stubbs was singing to me. I remember listening over and over again and getting chills each time the song started and every time they snapped into the chorus and their harmonies rang out over the instruments.

It was unreal. That song changed me. It was my catalyst, that and Gloria Estefan, but that’s a different story… TONIGHT we’re in South Haven, MI at Foundry Hall! Show time is 7:30pm!! See y’all tonight!

0 The Secret Wu-Tang Album

Y’all hear about this one yet? A new top secret Wu-Tang album has surfaced… And get this… They will only be selling one copy of it to the highest bidder…

20140513-131106.jpg
Apparently the RZA has already been offered 5 mil for it. You can already peep a 51 second sample of the album (which oddly enough, features Cher) on Forbes.com. It was produced over a 6 year period by Cilvaringz under “the tutelage of the RZA”, and is currently being held in a vault in the Grand Mansour in Marrakesh.

Not making this up.

DBRS at CSPS in Cedar Rapids, IA tonight at 7pm.

Wu-Tang.

2 Happy Mother’s Day from DBRS!

I feel it’s important to wake up every morning and try to be grateful for something, and today is no exception.  They say it takes a village to raise a child, but I tell you it takes a veritable army of support to raise a band, and our mothers (both literal and adopted band parents) are the generals!  Over the years on the road, they’ve encouraged us, come to our shows (even though they’re often way past their bedtimes), thrown a little extra cash in our pockets in a pinch, fed us when we were hungry, given us beds to sleep in after weeks of couches and floors, and watched us grow as a band from day one.  If not for the support we’ve gotten from our very extended family, we wouldn’t be here doing what we do today.

So everyone, take a second today and think about it… no mothers, no Dirty Bourbon River Show!  Ladies and gentlemen, go find your mothers, your grandmothers, your great grandmothers, your adopted mothers, and your fairy band mothers and thank them!  Thank them for raising you and getting you on your feet, for looking out for you when nobody else will, for being Mom even though you’re a grown-ass man goddamnit, and for the Dirty Bourbon River Show.  Pay them a visit or make a phone call or Skype with them on the computer and tell them how grateful you are… it’s worth it.

Now to celebrate this glorious day through the words and song of West Virginia legend, Terry Jackness.  Happy Mother’s Day!

0 Flaming Tubas Around the World pt. 1

  • · Live Shows · Tuba

Tuba players are an interesting bunch. We play the biggest, heaviest, most badass instrument known to man. Few outside the tuba world realize this fundamental fact. There is nothing more heavy metal than a tuba, unless of course, that tuba is also on fire. Here are some badasses that decided to educate the masses on the pure majesty of tuba.
