0 Blues you ough’ta know with Big Charlie: Albert Collins – The Iceman

Big Texas Blues

Albert Collins

Albert Collins showed the world just how powerful the Blues could be.  His guitar sound was humble and brash, and completely unique.  Collins played with no pick using his own “Attack”  style of fingerpicking.  He mostly played Telecasters in open minor tunings to create his incredible sustain and control.

Take a listen for yourself

(it gets crazy at 7:00 in if your low on free time)

Big Leagues

Albert Collins was at the forefront of a Blues revolution in the 70′s and 80′s. playing alongside such greats as Robert Cray, John Lee Hooker, and BB King, together they brought Blues into the spotlight once again.  Johnny Copeland, Robert Cray, and Mr. Collins even won a Grammy in 1983 for their collaborative album entitled “Showdown”(Highly recommended listening). Collins’ playing was so inspiring that composer John Zorn created a 13 minute Blues Suite to feature him.

My personal favorite Albert Collins Tune

0 What’s Going On in New Orleans Tonight

What's going on in the live music scene of New Orleans on Friday, April 8th, 2011

  • 04/08/2011
  • dirtybourbonrivershow
  • · Uncategorized

Finally, for like the first time in for effen eva, we don’t have to play a show on a Friday night. So we’ll be hittin’ the town, catching some of New Orlean’s finest. Here’s what’s going down in the Big Easy tonight:

Bywater cats, catch either Johnny Sketch & the Dirty Notes (Loyola Alum’s, Rock mixed w. Strings, Horns, bawdy singing, a damn good time) at the Blue Nile, or the Other Planets (Psychedelic Strange Rock, peep their video here) + Felix at the Always Lounge. Both of these shows start at 10pm. If your hoping for bedroom boogie by 10 & looking for a little earlier entertainment with your pretty little lady, go see Kermit (yeah, I’m pretty sure I don’t need to describe Kermit) at Rock’n'Bowl at 8:30.

Kirk Joseph, one of the greats joing the Break Science show at Tip's tonight

Pick of the Night: Break Science at Tipitina’s, 10pm. This show will feature Chali2na (MC from Jurassic 5, an OG, if you’ve never heard Quality Control, do your research) and Kirk Joseph (Susie player from Dirty Dozen, literally one of the best Tubists in the world). Opening the show will be Gypsyphonic Disko. I am particular interested in this. A collaboration between Galactic’s sax player, Ben Ellmen, and DJ Quickly Mart, Gypsyphonic Disko melds gypsy and Balkan horn and chordophone lines with New Orleans grooves and hip hop beats. Peep their tracks here:

Even if you can’t catch the show or don’t live in New Orleans, figured y’all would find this interesting, as it is in the similar vein of DBRS. Enjoy, & hope you have a delicious Friday!

Other Great Shows Upcoming Up:

Man Man at One Eyed Jack’s on May 2nd

Wanda Jackson at Tipitina’s on May 22nd

Man, still resting up after this past weekend’s CD release run. Had so much fun, met some new people, and saw some old friends. Have you checked out the new record yet? It’s available pretty much everywhere for only $9.99:

iTunes

Amazon

Bandcamp

Man, look at that Bassface. CD Release party, 4/2 @ the Blue Nile

Tell your friends, tell your mama, we’re real proud of this one. We’ll be touring it all around America this summer, which I’ll tell you about in the minute.

In the meantime, what’s going on for Dirty Bourbon? What are we up to as of late? What’ve we got for that big ol’ horizon up ahead? Well, I’ll tell ya:

For the rest of this month we won’t be playing any shows. We’ll be training our new bari sax player – Matt “Slyfox” Thomas – and finish writing the songs for Volume III (our next album – the Old-Timey Afropop Gibberish Junction – is already written & tracked, just finishing up overdubs & mixing). Then, in May, we’ll kick off on the 5th for a super duper Cinco de Mayo partay with Glasgow & Vox & the Hound, followed by a month long tour on the eastern seaboard to support the release of Volume II – catch us with Blair Cimmins, Megan Jean & Holy Ghost Tent Revival. Then, come summertime, nother big NOLA show, then back to the east coast for another month. Then, this fall, we’ll be heading west to Colorado for another month tour! And then, we’ll come back home & release our 4th album – Old-Timey Afropop Gibberish Junction. Expect Volume III sometime around spring 2012.

So yup, we’ve got a lot of big things planned for the future.

And don’t forget – tell everyone you know about the new album! This beast’s spreading like wildfire, let’s keep that fire hot.

Aight? Aight.

4 Album Review: Danger Painter’s IV

Album review of the Danger Painter's IV

  • 04/05/2011
  • dirtybourbonrivershow
  • · Albums

In the cosmos of music and art, the Danger Painter’s newest album, IV, is pretty insignificant. It’s no mega record like Zeppelin IV, it will probably never be toured, and not more than a few thousand people will listen to it, if that.

Then, you put fame and recognition aside, and if you are one of those few lucky wild at heart and weird on top-type people who have stumbled upon this unlikely record, you are left with a great feeling when you finish.

It makes you go Fuck Yeah.

The Danger Painters is comprised of longtime friends Bob Boilen and Michael Barron, formally of the DC band Tiny Desk Unit. IV, their 4th album, was written and recorded in a single month for the RPM Challenge, a yearly music industry tradition created in 2006 to help foster greater levels of productivity among musicians. The result is a true gem.

In this record you hear influences from all across the board. It is a record that echoes all sorts of great things – primary vocalist/songwriter Barron weaves through the tracks like a starker Stuart Staples – walking on Ostinato Black Keys-styled riffs and crunchy Oreos of aural accoutrements courtesy of his friend Mr. Boilen. The 7th track – Made on Earth (written by their bassist William X Harvey) – brings to mind Bowie and Radiohead. The 9th track, Power Off, rides on an Edward Sharpe-like sensibility, throwing in a little hootenanny and Zeppelin III-style rústico in the mix. In this record you hear the influence of many artists. Yet no part of this record is imitative.

It is instead universal.

IV is stitched together with great ambition, considering the time crunch it was produced in. It is presented very well. Occasionally the musicianship wobbles, but not awkwardly; instead it feels almost necessary at times, reminding you that the album you are listening to did not come from some mega band like Zeppelin or the Talking Heads or the Decemberists – but that it was made by two everyday guit’n’gear slingers like you or I, just doing what we like, without regard for fame or glory.

IV is do-it-yourself self-driven music appreciation at its finest.

It is also slightly autistic in this celebration, like a good 80’s Daniel Johnston tape. It touches you in darkly places, like a good Tindersticks or Scott Walker song. It is also strangely spirited and cheerful. And it is sometimes downright weird (my favorite track, When the Saints, is just fucking out there, in the best way possible – you blip and blop around, groove-hopping on bubbles and sonic zaps – dig it). IV is, from a mass taste perspective – a big no no. Yet, at the same time, it is entirely human. Any of us could have made this record. We just didn’t take the time to.

Give it a listen, and then go out and make your own record. Next year I invite all you fellow songwriters to enter the RPM challenge – if anything, it’ll keep your chops up and yield fodder for a future project. And, if you’re lucky, it may even produce a gem like the Danger Painter’s IV.

Download the full record for free from the Danger Painter’s website.
