No one raps anymore. Yes, this is the Dirty Bourbon River Show blog, but I need to get this off my chest. I know it’s been said before, but its all hype now. When was the last time someone younger than 20 named Rakim as one of the best ever? With a generation raised on it, it’s amazing how quickly we forgot how you used to be able to dance to the beat and have an ill MC on the track. What’s the constant refrain I hear “Man, you don’t need to be dope to get on the radio. Just payola and a beat that people will dance to”. And I always ask “Then why do you listen?” I always hear the same thing, who ever I’m talking to gives me a sheepish “Well, cus you dance to it…” Bullshit, I still remember when you could hear A Tribe Called Quest on the radio. Tell me you can’t dance to that and that Phife and Tip weren’t two of the best. Are there cats out now that do their shit right on a mass level? Of course, we still got Lupe and Raekwon’s Only Bulit 4 Cuban Linx pt. II was dope. Jay-Z can still be on point when he wants to be, but now we got Premo making beats for Christina Aguilera. Fucked, aint it? We still mourn losing Biggie, Pac, and ODB, but how many people still mourn Jam Master Jay or Big L? It’s like everyone gave a pass to the mainstream that said take the aesthetic, borrow what you want, but make sure you make it for everybody. Then the underground kept everything that was dope. Thing is, is there any form of music that is meant for everybody? Does everybody like jazz? No. So why does everybody have to like Hip-Hop? Why don’t the best MCs and the best producers get to put forth their best foot and let the people who want it come get it? And I don’t want to hear all about how it’s the nature of the beast, cus that beast is dying in its cave. Record sales DON’T MATTER anymore. So with dawn soon approaching, let’s take back whats ours. Or better yet, let’s just be good again.
What a wonderful Mardi Gras. What a wonderful fucking Mardi Gras. My god. Still mulling over everything that happened; some of it blurry, most good… where to begin?..
After playing Tipitina’s everything just kind of blends together… We win the Superbowl on Sunday… Mon. hurts the head… Slipped out of Gooslby’s class early and went downtown with a keg and my pirate friends midweek for the Super Bowl parade… then Friday, opened up for Rebirth Brass Band at Cafe Prytania (amazing show, thanks to all that came out), then Sat. blends into Sunday, saw Bootsy on a Thoth float, got pelted, then Lundi Gras took us all by storm… savagely drunk, stumbling around downtown, woke up on somebody’s lawn, delirious, made it to Zulu just in time…
Me & Bootsy sleeping on the ground just before Zulu...
Then I slept a long, long time, and now here I am, Ash Wednesday, full of sins, shedding them slowly, one by one… It’s been a long, wild Mardi Gras… thank you everyone who was a part of it…
Many great new things to come… new songs… going to SXSW… Album’s up on iTunes:
On Tuesday night, I found myself on the corner of Barrone and Howard with the rest of New Orleans celebrating the Saints victory in the Super Bowl. However, I had a problem. I am born and raised in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Not only that I am a Vikings fan. I have lived in New Orleans for the better part of a year and a half. While I love my first home with all my heart, so much has happened to me. I’ve had to run from a hurricane after only being here a week only to end up running towards the worst part of it in Baton Rouge. I’ve had the distinct pleasure of being accommodated in Orleans Parish Prison for a night. I’ve fallen in love and lost it. Not to mention my first Mardi Gras and all the other standard New Orleans bucket list experiences. So with this victory I found myself in the first conflict of interest since coming down here last fall.
See, I supported both teams in the regular season, knowing in my gut that they were destined to face each other in the playoffs. When they did, ultimately I sided with my home team. To do otherwise I felt would be treasonous. However, I knew that if New Orleans won, the city would have its hopes so high that it would seem impossible for them to not go on to win the Super Bowl. Since this is what happened, I could see in locals an excitement and hope that didn’t quite seem to be there before. So when time came for kickoff last Sunday, I wanted the Saints to win. Not for me, but for my second home. They needed it more than me.
While my first home has seen its share of let-downs on the football field, my second had been let down by so many of the things in which they had placed faith. It was in seeing this I realized how to reconcile my two homes. Just place my heart behind whichever one needs it the most and the rest should manage to work itself out.
This past Friday at Tipitina’s was by far my favorite show to date. Utterly fucking amazing. Thank you everybody who came out and shared these fine times.Look for live recordings, more photos, video and much more to come. Anyone with pics please please hit them up on the facebook here:
So, heres the breakdown. DBRS is sending out a call to ANYONE with a camera to take lots of pictures on February 5th at our CD release show at Tipitina’s. But here’s the rub, we don’t just want pictures of ourselves (we’re not that vain) we want to see what yall see on Friday. You see the ghost of Old Dirty Bastard eating french fries, we wanna see it. Yall see a man on a horse evade capture by the constables via hot air balloon, damn straight we want to see that too. SO when you wake up the next day and have a minute, roll on over to our Facebook and post up whatever pictures you end up with. We will love you even more forever more.
